PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound industrially advantageously useful as a raw material for a dye, an antioxidant, etc., by reacting a nitrochlorobenzene with an aromatic amine in the presence of a copper catalyst, K2CO3, and -caprolactam.

CONSTITUTION: A nitrochlorobenzeme shown by the formula I (R1 is H or alkyl) is reacted with an aromatic amine shown by the formula II (R2 is H or alkyl) in the presence of a copper catalyst, K2CO3, and -Caprolactam, to give a compound shown by the formula X. The presence of -Caprolactam as a reaction accelerator can provide improved reaction promoting effect. -Caprolactam has no offensive odor, the desired substance obtained by the reaction can be separated easily. An amount of -caprolactam is preferably 5W30mol%, based on 1mol of the compound shown by the formula I.
