PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a cosmetic base or additive of cosmetics, external drugs, etc., easily, by carrying out the oxidative coupling of acetylene alcohol and subjecting the reaction product to the direct hydrogenative decomposition or to the hydrogenative decomposition after hydrogenation.
CONSTITUTION: The perhydrolycopene of formula IV can be prepared by (1) subjecting the acetylene alcohol of formula I or its mixture to the oxidative coupling to obtain the compound of formula II, and (2) carrying out the direct hydrogenative decomposition of the compound of formula II, or the hydrogenative decomposition of the unsaturated compound free from triple bond or the compound of formula III obtained by the hydrogenation of the compound of formula II. The latter process is preferable to the direct hydrogenative decomposition process.
USE: Lubricating oil for low-temperature use, and plasticizer for polymer.
