PURPOSE: To efficiently prepare the subject compound in simplified processes by reacting phenol with isobutylene in the presence of aluminum phenoxide, oxidizing the reaction product in the presence of an alkali catalyst and further removing the butyl groups from the oxidization product in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol is reacted with isobutylene in the presence of aluminum phenoxide to prepare 2,6-di-t-butylphenol. The reaction solution as such is subjected to an oxidation reaction in the presence of an alkali catalyst into 3,3',5,5'-tetrabutylbiphenol. The reaction solution is subjected to a butyl group- removing reaction in the presence of a catalyst and subsequently cooled to form crude crystals, which are treated with activated charcoal to economically provide the objective compound useful for liquid crystal polymers, engineering plastic-modifying agents, phenolic resin-modifying agents, etc., in the consistent processes in high purity without separating and purifying the intermediates from the raw materials.
