To provide a printer which receives data from a data source device via such a communication interface that one of two connected communication devices serves as a communication master and the other thereof serves as a communication slave, and that the communication master can connect with multiple communication slaves but the communication slave can connect with only one communication master, which does not reduce its throughput even when receiving a connection request to serve as a communication slave.
When the printer 100, in the case of being connected to a first external device (for example, a PDA 103), detects a connection request (inquiry) output from a second external device (for example, a digital camera 105), the printer 100 sets its own role to a communication slave, and thereafter changes the own role from the communication slave to a communication master automatically or manually at a predetermined timing (for example, when a physical connection is established).
