Abstract:

To provide a process for separating and recovering aromatic hydrocarbon compounds such as polycyclic aromatics from a liquid oil at a low energy consumption and a low cost without the necessity for high temperatures, high pressures, and an expensive catalyst and without producing a large quantity of carbon dioxide.

This process comprises adding a nucleophilic reagent such as an alcoholic solvent or water to a liquid oil to enhance the selectivity of the solvent for the organosulfur compounds because of attention paid to the fact that an aromatic hydrocarbon has powerful electron-donating properties, that organosulfur compounds themselves have aromatic rings, and that the divalent lone electron pair on the sulfur atom has powerful electron-donating properties and the aromatic hydrocarbon compounds; separating the mixture of the organosulfur compounds having more powerful electron-donating properties with the aromatic hydrocarbon compounds from the liquid oil; adding a highly electron-donating solvent to the mixture to thereby separate and recover the organosulfur compounds from the aromatic hydrocarbon compounds in virtue of the difference between their electron donating properties.
