PURPOSE: To obtain the title derivative useful as a herbicide or its intermediate by reaction of a hydroxylamine with an imidate compound prepared by e.g. reaction of a 3-(substituted phenoxy)benzamide with a lower alkylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula IV can be obtained by reaction between (A) a compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R5 and R6 are each H or lower alkyl; Z is H or NO2; A- is anion) or formula II and (B) a compound of formula III [R is H, alkali metal, lower alkyl, aralkyl or -C(R2)HCOWR3 (R2 is H or lower alkyl; R3 is H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, etc.; W is O or S)] or its salt. The compound of the formula II is a new material and can be prepared by reaction of a 3-(substituted phenoxy)benzotrichloride of formula V with an alkoxylating agent of formula R1O-Y (Y is H or alkali metal).
