PURPOSE: An emulsion polymerization of a specified amount of a water-soluble vinyl monomer bearing a quarternary nitrogen and water-insoluble vinyl nomomers is effected using a water-soluble polymerization initiator in the absence of an emulsifying agent to produce title latex being useful as photography materials because the surface tension can readily controlled on the coating process.
CONSTITUTION: The emulsion copolymerization of (a) 20W50mol%, based on the total monomers, of a water-soluble vinyl monomrs bearing a quarternary nitrogen given as formula I [R1, R2 are H, halogen, lower alkyl; A is alkylene as methylene or ethylene or arylene; B is formula II (R6, R7, R8 are H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl respectively), formula III (R9 is lower alkyl, aralkyl; X- is residue of anion)] and (b) water-insoluble vinyl monomers is conducted in the presence of 0.0005W0.5mole, per mole of the vinyl monomers, of a water-soluble polymerization initiator as alkali persulfate or 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride to produce the objective latex.
