Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a chloropyrazine in high yield directly from pyrazine by reacting pyrazine with a chlorinating agent in a polar solvent.

CONSTITUTION: Pyrazine is reacted with a chlorinating agent (e.g. chlorine, sulfuryl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride or sulfur chloride) in a polar solvent such as N,N-dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide or hexamethylphosphoramide at room temperature to 120°C preferably 30-100°C to give a chloropyrazine of the formula (X is H or Cl and is located at the 3- or 6-position). In the case of producing mainly 2-chloropyrazine, 1-2mol chlorinating agent is preferably used based on 1mol pyrazine. In the case of producing mainly 2,3-dichloropyrazine and 2,6-dichloropyrazine, the ratio of formation of 2,3-dichloropyrazine is raised with increase in the amount of the polar solvent to be used.
