PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compounds in high yield by mixing a metal phenolate corresponding to the objective compounds with a dibromodifluoromethane or bromochlorodifluoromethane and an aprotic polar solvent and subsequently adding a specific reaction initiator thereto.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound expressed by formula I[R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, allyl, phenyl, phenoxy, etc.; x and y each are integers of 0-5 and x + y is 1-5; M is alkali metal (n is 1) or alkaline earth metal (n is 2)] is reacted with (B) dibromofluoromethane or bromochlorodifluoromethane to produce compounds, expressed by formula II (Z is Cl or Br) and useful as an intermediate for compounds having plant activity or pharmacological activity. In the process, the compounds (A) and (B) are mixed with an aprotic polar solvent and a metal alcoholate or hydride as a reaction initiator is then added in an amount within the range of 0.01-2 molar ratio based on the compound (A) to afford the objective compounds in high yield.
