PURPOSE: To impart the coefft. of thermal expansion approximate to the coefft. of thermal expansion of an Al alloy to the sliding member and to improve the wear resistance of the sliding member by subjecting the sliding member to an austemper treatment and subjecting the sliding surface to shot peening.
CONSTITUTION: The sliding member made of a cast iron is subjected to the austemper treatment to form the structure contg. 50% residual austenite. The sliding surface of this sliding member is subjected to the shot peening at 0.05 to 0.2mm short grain diameter. The transformation of the residual austenite to martensite is suppressed to a lower level in this way and the high surface hardness and sufficient wear resistance are assured. Since many fine recesses are formed on the sliding surface, the sliding characteristic by an oil reserving effect is improved. This sliding member is applicable to all members which make fitting and sliding with the mating member of the Al alloy.
