Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce high purity hydrogen contg. virtually no nitrogen, etc. by deaerating preliminarily the water to be supplied to an electrolyzing stage to obtain hydrogen by electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:Preliminarily deaerated water is supplied to a cathode chamber using an ion exchange membrane as a diaphragm by which caustic alkali is formed in the cathode chamber and gaseous hydrogen having high purity is obtd. in a method for producing hydrogen by electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride. High purity hydrogen is obtd. in water electrolysis by deaerating preliminarily the electrolyte to be supplied to an electrolytic cell. A method of deaerating the water under reduced pressure is preferred for the above-method of deaerating preliminarily the water. The feed water is flashed at about 45-60 deg.C water temp. under about 110mm.Hg pressure by which the dissolved gas in the water after the dearation and above all, the gaseous nitrogen can be made roughly zero. High purity hydrogen contg. virtually zero nitrogen is obtainable by using such water.
