PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing each of the objective compounds useful as reagent, etc., in high yield by using a basic laminar compound, which is tree from toxicity and poison, easy in handling, easily separated from the reaction product and easy in a waste treatment, as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A lactone is produced by oxidizing an alicyclic ketone in a liquid phase, or an acyclic ester having a tertiary alkyl and/or an aromatic ring is produced by oxidizing an acyclic ketone having the tertiary alkyl and/or the aromatic ring in a liquid phase, in the presence of (A) a basic laminar compound as a catalyst and (B) a peroxide and optionally (C) an organic solvent. Preferably further, at least one kind selected from an alkyl halide, a carbon halide, an aromatic hydrocarbon, an ester and an inactive ketone is used as the component C, and one compound selected from a hydrotalcite, a hydrotalcite mimic, a compound of the formula [M(II) is a divalent metal other than Mg2+; An- is an n-valent anion; 0<x<1 0<z<1], etc., is used as the component B.
