Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a lactone with improved yield by hydrogenation, in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, of raw materials including saturated dicarboxylic acid, its anhydride with unsaturated dicarboxylic acid etc. each reduced to an amount not more than a specified value in a recycling manner for said raw materials without causing catalyst activity.

CONSTITUTION: The content of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid etc. contained in raw materials including saturated carboxylic acid, its anhydride and/or saturated dicarboxylic acid ester (normally, such raw materials are produced by hydrogenation of the corresponding unsaturated compounds; however, the resulting reaction product will contain unreacted unsaturated carboxylic acids) is reduced, in advance, to such a level as to be ≤0.4 (pref. 0.2)wt.% based on the raw materials. The resultant raw materials are then hydrogenated in a liquid phase in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, thus obtaining the objective lactone. The removal of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acids contaminated in the saturated dicarboxylic acids is carried out through e.g. hydrogenation in the presence of a reducing catalyst.
