Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the large-sized sintered aluminum oxynitride excellent in light transmissible property by adding Y2O3 to the aluminum oxynitride powder having a specified purity and a specific surface as a sintering assistant, sintering the mixture at atmospheric pressure in high-temp. gaseous N2 to densify the material and then applying HIP.

CONSTITUTION: The aluminum oxynitride powder having ≥99% purity and ≥3m2/g or preferably 10-20m2/g specific surface (BET value) is prepared. Y2O3 is added to the powder as a sintering assistant, and the mixture is formed at ≥1000kg/cm2 by CIP, etc., and then sintered at atmospheric pressure in gaseous N2. The amt. of Y2O3 is preferably controlled to 0.01-3wt.%. The sintered body is subjected to HIP. Since the sintered body is isotropically compressed in HIP, the removal of pores is promoted by plastic deformation and diffusion, the sintered body is uniformly densified, the strain and structural heterogeneity in the sintered body are reduced, and optically uniform sintered aluminum oxynitride having high light transmissible property is obtained.
