PURPOSE: To industrially advantageously obtain the compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines and agrichemicals by hydrolyzing a N,O- dialkylhydroxycarbamic acid ester in the presence of an alkali in an aqueous solution or a water-containing solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A N,O-dialkylhydroxycarbamic acid ester of formula I (R1 is hydrocarbon; R2 is lower alkyl) (e.g. methyl N,O-dimethyl-hydroxycarbamate) is hydrolyzed in an aqueous solution or a water-containing solvent (e.g. methanol) to provide the N,O-dialkylhydroxylamine of formula II (e.g. N,O- dimethylhydroxylamine). As an alkali used for hydrolysis, hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali metal such as lithium, sodium or potassium is preferably used. In this method, since a catalytic amount of the alkali is used in place of an acid, a free and anhydrous N,O-dialkylhydroxylamine is obtained without forming a N,O-dialkylhydroxylamine salt.
