PURPOSE: To obtain N,N-dihydrocarbylhydroxylamine useful as a stabilizer for various polymeric substrates in one stage in an easy and profitable manner by allowing an aldehyde to react with hydroxylamine hydrochloride under conditions of hydrogenation.
CONSTITUTION: Aldehyde represented by the formula RCHO (where R is a 1-17 C alkyl, a phenyl substd. alkyl, a 5-12 C cycloalkyl, a 6-10 C aryl, etc.) is allowed to react with hydroxylamine hydrochloride at room temp. in an org. solvent such as alkanol in the presence of a noble metal such as Pt as a hydrogenation catalyst in an atmosphere of hydrogen under 1.05-4.2 kg/cm2 pressure until the incorporation of hydrogen is completed to obtain the objective N,N-dihydrocarbylhydroxylamine represented by the formula (RCH2)2NOH, e.g. N,N-di-n-propylhydroxylamine. The hydroxylamine hydrochloride is used by 0.5-0.6 equiv. per 1 equiv. of the aldehyde and the catalyst is used by 0.1-1 mol%.
