To provide a method for producing an organic azide, giving an azide functional group to an organic compound in a high yield, by adding an alkyl carboxylic acid ester having a boiling point above the reaction temperature in a nearly equimolar amount to an epoxide derivative of an organic compound to react in a solvent, when the epoxide derivative is reacted with an alkali metal azide salt.
This method for producing an organic azide comprises reacting (A) an epoxide derivative of an organic compound, for example, styrene oxide, 2,3-epoxybutane, indene oxide and 1,6:2,3-dianhydro-4-O-phenylmethyl-β-D- mannopyranose, with (B) an alkali metal azide salt (for example, sodium azide), wherein (C) a 1-6C alkyl ester of a 2-4C carboxylic acid having a boiling point above the reaction temperature, for example, butyl acetate, in a near equimolar amount to the epoxide derivative is added to the reaction mixture before and/or during the reaction, and the reaction is carried out at, preferably, 60-120°C in a solvent.
