PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing a p-alkoxybenzaldehyde in a high yield without using a large excess of an alkylating agent by alkylating p-hydroxybenzaldehyde with a halogenated alkyl in the presence of a basic material under a specified pH condition.
CONSTITUTION: Para-hydroxybenzaldehyde(p-HBA) is alkylated with a halogenated alkyl of the formula R-X (R is a linear or branched 1-6C alkyl; X is a halogen) in the presence of a basic material (preferably NaOH, KOH or the like) while keeping the pH in 8-12 to provide the objective compound in the method for producing a p-alkoxybenzaldehyde. The p-HBA is preferably used in a form of a reaction mixture including the p-HBA obtained by catalytically oxidizing p-cresol with oxygen in methanol in the presence of an alkali by using iron porphyrin as the catalyst. The alkylation is preferably carried out at a temp. of 70-130°C under a pressure of 2-10 bar. The pH is preferably maintained by adding the before basic material while measuring the weight of the basic material.
