PURPOSE: To improve the sun protection factor(SPF) of a textile material by washing the material with a detergent contg. a specific fluorescent brightener which also acts as an ultraviolet absorber.
CONSTITUTION: A textile material (pref. cotton) is washed, pref. at 15-60°C, with a detergent contg. a fluorescent brightener which absorbs a radiation in a wavelength range of 280-400 nm. Compds. of formulas I to III (wherein R1 and R2 are each OH, NH2, or the like) are pref. as the brightener; the compd. of formula II is esp. pref. for treating polyester fabrics, and the compd. of formula III, for treating polyamides and wool. Pref., the detergent comprises 5-70 wt.% anionic and/or nonionic surfactant, 5-40 wt.% builder, 1-12 wt.% peroxide, 1-6 wt.% peroxide activator and/or 0.1-3 wt.% bleaching catalyst, 0.01-1 wt.% fluorescent brightener described above, and 0.1-5 wt.% other auxiliaries.
