PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is a synthetic intermediate for medicine or various kind of useful compounds in good shelf stability, colorless state and high yield, by purifying benzylpyruvic acid using a water-containing halogenated hydrocarbon solution in purification of the benzylpyruvic acid by crystallization.
CONSTITUTION: A water-containing halogenated hydrocarbon solution of benzylpyruvic acid is crystallized to purify the aimed compound. As the halogenated hydrocarbon, though every solvent dissolving beszylpyruvic acid can be used, preferably 1W10C halogenated alkyl, halogenated aralkyl, halogenated allyl, etc., especially preferably carbon tetrachloride is used. Water content of the halogenated hydrocarbon solution preferably exists at an amount of 1W100mol times, especially 1.5W10mol times based on benzylpyruvic acid contained in the solution. The halogenated hydrocarbon is preferably used at an amount of 1W20 weight times based on benzylpyruvic acid.
