Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the subject novel compound that originates from a specific microorganism, has strong and selective inhibitory action against catecholamine- O-methyl transferase and is useful for the treatment of Parkinsonism.

CONSTITUTION: This novel compound is represented by the formula, typically 8-O-methylpurpurogallincarboxylic acid, its esters or their salts. The compound of the formula is prepared by fermentation of a microorganism in Absidia, preferably Absidia species NR7184 (FERM BP-4599) in a culture medium under aerobic conditions, at 20°C-35°C, preferably at 27°C and a pH of 3-9.50 for 50-200 hours and separating the product from the culture mixture. The compound of the formula has the following physical and chemical properties: appearance, brownish powder; melting point, 276-284°C (decomposition); molecular formula, C13H10O7; solubility, soluble in DMSO, MeOH, slightly soluble in water and the like.
