Title:
RARE EARTH/IRON FLUORIDE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING AND USING THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2557757
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a rare earth/iron fluoride compound useful as a reactant in a thermite reduction process.
CONSTITUTION: The particulate mixture of Fe2O3 and RE2O3 (RE is rare earth elements) is reacted with HF acid in an amount exceeding a stoichiometric amount, and in this case, the HF acid generates an insoluble fluoride compound comprising REF3 and FeF3 present in a solid solution state in the crystal, lattice of REF3. The fluoride compound is dried and a single reagent useful for the thermite reduction process or the like which requires an REF3/FeF3 mixture is obtained. The fluoride compound containing REF3 (RE is the rare earth element) and 5-40 wt.% of FeF3 present in the solid solution state in the crystal lattice of REF3 and thermite reduction reaction using it are presented. It is useful for the manufacture of a rare earth/iron magnet.
