Abstract:

To separate and recover C1 chlorocarbons by absorbing them from a gaseous mixture comprising the C2 chlorocarbons and noncondensible gases using a liquid hydrocarbon having an average molecular weight within a specified range.

C1 chlorocarbons are recovered by contacting a gaseous mixture comprising the C1 chlorocarbons and noncondensible gases with an absorbent comprising a liquid hydrocarbon having an average molecular weight within a range of 142 to 422 pref. at -20 to 0°C under a gauge pressure of 20-50 psi (138-345 kPa) to effect absorption of the C1 chlorocarbons into the absorbent and separation of them from the noncondensible gases. The present process is especially useful for separating methyl chloride from a gaseous mixture resulting from an oxychlorination process wherein the gaseous mixture further comprises methane, water vapor and hydrogen chloride. The absorbent to be used is, in particular a branched liquid hydrocarbon with an average molecular weight of 270-275, among others, being a substantially branched hydrogenated dimer of 1-decene with an average molecular weight of 272.
