Abstract:

PURPOSE: To form a uniformly hardened layer on the sliding surface of a cam by increasing the supply rate of the gaseous plasma to the rising part of the sliding surface of the cam to the rate larger than the supply rate to the falling part at the time of subjecting the sliding surface of the cam to a remelting and hardening treatment by a plasma torch.

CONSTITUTION: The plasma torch 38 is displaced to advance and retreat in the major axis direction of a cam shaft W in proximity to the sliding surface 60a of the cam 60 and the shaft W is rotated in a direction D. A high voltage is impressed simultaneously between a tungsten electrode 44 and the shaft W to generate a plasma arc 32. A shielding gas is ejected from a passage 40a and a pilot gas is ejected from an ejection port 42b. The sliding surface 60a is irradiated with the plasma arc 52 and metal powder is supplied from a supply port 38c to execute the remelting and hardening treatment. The amt. of the gaseous plasma to the rising part (a, b, c1) of the sliding surface 60a of the cam is selected to the value larger than the amt. of the gaseous plasma of the rising part (C2, d, e). The generation of the deformation on the sliding surface of the cam is prevented in this way and the hardened layer having a uniform thickness is formed.
