Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare water absorbents having high absorption both under no pressure and under high pressure and, in addition, a reduced content of water soluble components compared with the conventional ones.
SOLUTION: A process for preparing absorbents comprises neutralizing a water-containing gel polymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer component containing an acid group-containing unsaturated monomer (salt) and subsequently allowing the resulting polymer to react with a crosslinking agent capable of reacting with the functional group of the polymer, and the water-containing gel polymer obtained by polymerizing the monomer component containing an acid group-containing unsaturated monomer (salt) is post-neutralized and the water-containing gel polymer after the neutralization is subjected to heat treatment for predetermined time while retaining its gel state. The water-containing gel polymer thus heat treated is dried to a powder state and the resulting polymer is allowed to react with a crosslinking agent capable of reacting with the functional group in the polymer.
