To provide a structure which is capable of appropriately conveying a sheet in accordance with a thickness and a type of the sheet without needing to change the position of arranging the sheet.
A sheet conveying device comprises an upper conveying member 8 as a first conveying member and a lower conveying member 31 as a second conveying member, which are arranged oppositely to each other, with a gap between the opposing surfaces of them constituting a conveyance path 102 for conveying a sheet. The sheet is conveyed in the conveyance path 102 by conveyance rollers 1, 3 and paper discharge rollers 2, 4 as conveying means. The device also comprises a link mechanism 5a, as gap changing means, which changes the distance between the opposing surfaces of the upper conveying member 8 and the lower conveying member 31, that is, the gap in the conveyance path 102. By using this link mechanism 5a, the gap in the conveyance path 102 is changed in accordance with the thickness and the type of the sheet.
