To provide a sheet stacking apparatus capable of accurately detecting a sheet present in a gripper without making its structure complex.
The apparatus includes a conveyor belt 203 that stacks sheets and turns to move, a plurality of sheet grippers 220 each disposed on the belt 203 to grip a sheet by pressing it to the sheet stacking face of the belt 203, and a plurality of sheet detection sensors S1 each detecting the presence or the absence of a sheet held between each of the sheet grippers 220 and the sheet stacking face of the belt 203. In the apparatus, the sensors S1 include a light emitting member emitting light and a light receiving member receiving light emitted from the light emitting member fixed to a position of detecting the presence or the absence of a sheet upon facing the grippers 220 whose position is disposed below the sheet stacking face of the belt 203.
