PURPOSE: To provide the shift lever device of an automatic transmission which is devised to effect both selection of a range and selection of a gear ratio during ordinary running by a single shift lever.
CONSTITUTION: A shift lever 51 is pivotally supported in such a state that it is erected upright on a car body and inclined in one direction of a right or a left to be longitudinally rotatable and an electric control device 41 is provided to be operable in linkage with longitudinal rotation of the shift lever 51. A side lever 10 integrally engaged in such a state that the shift lever 51 stands upright is provided adjacently to a position plate 3 and engageably with and disengageably from the shift lever 5. The position pin 60 of the shift lever 51 is engaged with the side lever 10 to form a vertically movable groove 17 and coupled with a cable 20 for speed change. A holding means 6 with which the shift lever 51 is inclined and engaged and a switch means 90 to bring the electric control device 41 into an OFF state in such a state that the shift lever 51 stands upright and brings a variable resistor 41 into an ON-state when it is brought into an inclined state are provided.
