Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst which can convert carboxylic acids into the corresponding acid chlorides or esters by grafting through covalent bonds with polysubstd. guanidinium groups, preferably polyalkylguanidinium groups on the surface of a silica catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The carrier essentially comprising silica is a porous one for easy filtration and consists of small spheres having 0.01 to 1 mm diameter, 50 to 750 m2/g specific surface area and about 4.8 to 10 mol/m2 density of silanol functional groups on the surface. The silica is reacted with polyalkylguanidinium ions to obtain a catalyst expressed by formula I. The obtd. catalyst is useful for esterification of acids having hindered groups. In formula I, R is a carrier essentially comprising silica; Y is a branched or straight-chain 2-10C bivalent alkyl; Z is a 2-10C bivalent aliphatic group; R' is a 1-4C alkyl; R1 to R7 are each 1-6C alkyl; A is a univalent anion; n is 0 or an integer; T is a bond with the carrier, -Si(R0)3' or 1-4C alkyl; R0 is a 1-4C alkyl.
