Abstract:

To provide low-cost steel for a crank shaft which has excellent machinability and wear resistance, attacks a bearing only to a small extent, and to provide a crank shaft produced by using the steel.

The steel for a crank shaft having excellent machinability and wear resistance has a composition containing, by weight, 0.55 to 0.61% C, ≤0.60% Si, 1.00 to 2.00% Mn, 0.04 to 0.35% S, 0.05 to 0.50% Cr, <0.005% Al and ≤0.0020% O and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. After hot forging, the steel has a structure essentially consisting of pearlite having a pro-eutectoid ferrite fraction of ≤3%, and containing sulfide inclusions with a thickness of ≤20 μm.
