PURPOSE: To provide a vehicle steering device of simple structure and low cost having the capability of determining an assist force via the detection of the steering power of a steering shaft, when a flexible long material is used for the transmission of the power to a steering wheel.
CONSTITUTION: A steering device 10 has a steering shaft 20 and a connecting rod 12 jointed to each other, and a belt 18 for the transmission of steering power. The fasteners 22 and 24 of the belt 18 are respectively fitted with strain gauges 26 and 28 for detecting tension acting on the belt 18. The tension of the belt 18 corresponds to the steering torque of the shaft 20. Thus, the steering torque of the shaft 20 can be detected on the basis of the tension of the belt 18, thereby enabling assist power to be easily determined.
