Title:
STEERING SYSTEM FOR ARTICULATED VEHICLE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5222233
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1491412 Vehicle steering mechanism CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 10 March 1976 [14 Aug 1975] 09596/76 Heading B7H An articulated loader or scraper vehicle has front and rear body sections 12, 14 connected by a steering pivot 16, an axle 24 mounted on the front body section 12 so as to be steerable relative thereto, and a two-part steering system comprising axle-steer cylinders 50, 52, articuated-steer cylinders 84, 86, a steering wheel 76, and a steering control valve 82 operable by the steering wheel 76 for actuating the axle-steer and articulated-steer cylinders in sequence so that small directional changes are effected by turning of the axle 24 and larger directional changes are effected by articulation of the body sections 12, 14. The control valve 82 ncludes a spool which is displaced by pressure signals from a pilot valve 80 actuated by a control pump 80 coupled to the steering wheel 76. The amount of displacement of the control valve spool is proportional to rotation of the steering wheel 76, the first increment of displacement of the spool directing pressure fluid to the axle-steer cylinders 50, 52 to turn the axle through a maximum of three degrees, and subsequent displacement directing fluid to the articulated-steer cylinders 84, 86. A second pilot valve 98 connected to the steering control valve 82 is operated by solenoids 94, 96 energized by a sensor circuit 92 connected to a transducer 90 for sensing rolling of the front body section 12 relative to the axle 24. When the body rolls the steering control valve 82 is actuated automatically without movement of the steering wheel 76 to provide correction of oversteer or addition of a desired level of understeer.
