PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound capable of producing hydantocidin in high yield without forming stereoisomers. CONSTITUTION: This sugar derivative is a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 each is H or together form a (substituted) alkylidene; R3 and R4 each is H or together form a (substituted) alkylidene; R5 and R6 each is H, COR10 (R10 is a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, an aryl, etc.) or SO2R11 (R11 is a lower alkyl, an aryl, etc.)], e.g. 1, 2:3,4-di-O-isopropyl idene-6-O-methoxycarbonylamino- D-psicofuranose. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II (X is an eliminable group) with a compound of formula H0NR5R6.
