PURPOSE: To accelerate the access, to eliminate the stand by time at reproducing and recording time and to record information with excellent reliability by setting the distance between a magneto-optical disk and a magnetic head to the state separated with a minute distance.

CONSTITUTION: When a recording mode is set, a driving currnt value ID is supplied to the driving circuit of the magnetic head 8. Thus, the magnetic field with intensity HA similar to the case of a musical disk is supplied to a magneto-optical disk surface. Further, by a magnetic head position switching circuit 5, the magnetic head 8 is set to the state separated from an optical disk 9 with the distance ZD when a data disk is set. Thus, high speed access in the radial direction of the data disk is realized, and the stand-by time at the time of switching a reproducing/recording mode is eliminated, too. Further, power consumption at the time of recording on the musical disk is reduced.
