PURPOSE: To suppress frictional heat in slip condition by providing an oil pressure control mechanism for changing the amount of fluid supplied to the frictional surface of a direct connecting clutch simultaneously with maintaining a pressure difference applied to the direct connecting clutch at a nearly constant level in order to control slip condition of the direct connecting clutch.
CONSTITUTION: In a torque converter, when the set pressure value of a relief valve 18 in an oil pressure control mechanism is set to P18 and the set pressure value of a relief valve 16 is set to P16, the difference (P18-P16) between the set pressure values of the relief valves 16 and 18 is increased/decreased while maintaining the relation of P18>P16, in order to change the flow amount of oil, while maintaining the pressure difference between front and rear pressures of a direct connecting clutch at a nearly constant level, in order to maintain the slip condition of the direct connecting clutch. The relief valves 16, 18 are switched from slip condition of the direct connecting clutch 1 so as to not operate, and thereby, the direct connecting clutch 1 is placed in its completely fastening condition. And further then solenoid valves 20, 21 are switched, then, oil flow is reversed, so that the direct connecting clutch 1 is switched to its released condition.
