Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable the computation of a flow rate of fine powder, by a method wherein interference fringes of electromagnetic waves are formed in a channel of fine powder by using two microwave beams and another microwave beam is used for providing to detect a change in a pattern of the interference fringes. CONSTITUTION:When microwave beams 3 and 4 are transmitted into a channel 1 of fine powder through microwave transmitting windows 5, interference fringes of microwaves are generated in the vicinity of the intersecting point of the beams 3 and 4. When the fine powder is present and flows, the beams 3 and 4 are subjected to a Doppler shift by a flowing velocity component of the fine powder in the respective advancing directions and thereby a change occurs in a pattern of the interference fringes. When a microwave beam 14 for probing is transmitted, on the occasion, so that it intersects a fine powder flow 2 at a right angle substantially and also intersects the beams 3 and 4 in the vicinity of the intersecting point thereof, the beam 14 is subjected to a electromagnetic field intensity modulation due to the interference fringes and separated into a transmitted component and a back scattered component. Accordingly, the back scattered component is received and inputted to a microwave power detector 12, and based on the intensity of a output signal of the detector and the characteristic of a change of the signal on a time basis, the flow rate of the fine powder can be computed by an arithmetic unit 13.
