To provide a relatively simple-structured and highly reliable variable cycle internal combustion engine, and a controller capable of properly switching the cycle of the variable cycle engine.
A 2-cycle operation cam 1 having two projections 1a and 1b and a 4-cycle operation cam 3 having one projection 3a are used switchingly by a can switching mechanism. By the 2-cycle operation cam 1, the valve opening operation of an exhaust valve is performed once for one rotation of a crankshaft and, by the 4-cycle operation cam 3, the valve opening operation of a supply/exhaust valve is performed once for two rotations of the crankshaft. When the engine is in a low revolution low load running area, the 4-cycle operation is selected, and the 2-cycle operation is selected in area over the former.
