Abstract:

PURPOSE:To prepare a viscose sponge excellent in dry flexibility and wet strengths by molding a mixture of viscose with a reinforcing fiber, an aq. emulsion of a specific polymer and glauber's salt, thermally coagulating and then treating with an acid. CONSTITUTION:Viscose is mixed with a reinforcing fiber (pref. a synthetic fiber having a percentage crimp of 10-30% or having a modified cross section, and having a fiber length of 5-20mm and a diameter of 1-6d to obtain a sponge with an excellent dry flexibility and small dry shrinkage), an aq. emulsion of a polymer with a glass transition temp. of 15 to 20 deg.C and obtd. by copolymerizing using at least one of unsatd. carboxylate esters of the formula (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each H or CH3; R<3> is alkyl) (e.g. butyl methacrylate) as a monomer component, and glauber's salt. The resulting mixture is molded, thermally coagulated and then acid-treated to produce a viscose sponge, which is excellent in dry flexibility and wet strengths.
