To provide a washing machine and a washing and drying machine, having cloth amount detecting means capable of accurately detecting a cloth amount in a drum.
A washing machine executes: an acceleration step for accelerating the rotation of a drum 3 from in a stationary state to a rotation angular speed beyond a first predetermined rotation angular speed N1 by using a motor 7; and thereafter a cloth detection step having a first detection step for measuring friction torque Ta by constantly rotating the drum at the first predetermined rotation angular speed N1 for a predetermined time t1, and a second detection step for, after the first detection step, measuring an angular acceleration α during deceleration when the rotation angular speed is decreased from a second predetermined rotation angular speed N2 to a third predetermined rotation angular speed N3, by decelerating the rotation of the drum by allowing the motor to generate deceleration torque Tb, and thus detecting a cloth amount on tha basis of the friction torque Ta measured at the first detection step and the angular acceleration α measured at the second detection step. The detection of the cloth amount in a state in which clothing is stably stuck onto an inner wall of the drum 3 allows the cloth amount to be detected more accurately.
