Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell that includes an anode catalyst layer containing an alloy catalyst of a noble metal such as platinum, and ruthenium, and includes a cathode suffering very little degradation caused by migration of ruthenium in an electrolyte membrane to the cathode.SOLUTION: A fuel cell 10 includes a flat membrane electrode assembly 50, and a separator 34 and a separator 36 are provided on both sides of the membrane electrode assembly 50. The membrane electrode assembly 50 includes a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 20, an anode 22, and a cathode 24. The anode 22 includes a laminate composed of a first catalyst layer 26, a second catalyst layer 27, and a gas diffusion layer 28. The first catalyst layer 26 contains a first ion conductor (an ion exchange resin), and carbon particles supporting platinum-palladium. The second catalyst layer 27 contains a second ion conductor, and carbon particles supporting a second alloy catalyst of a noble metal and a metal that has an ionization tendency greater than that of ruthenium.
