PURPOSE: To obtain a constant attenuation quantity regardless of wavelengths of light signals by eliminating the wavelength-dependency of a light attenuator using dopants.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber of a mode field diameter most suitable to the wavelengths of the light signals to be transmitted is obtd. by adjusting the refractive index distribution and core diameter, etc., of a single mode fiber. The light signal of the shorter wavelength receives the higher attenuation than the light signal of the longer wavelength if the mode field diameter is so selected as to be adaptable to the light signal of the longer wavelength out of the light signals of two kinds of the wavelengths to be inputted to the light attenuator. On the other hand, the dependency of the light attenuation characteristic on the wavelengths occurring in the selection of the mode field diameter is offset if the dopant to more largely attenuate the transmitted light of the longer wavelength of the light signals is incorporated into the optical fiber 5 shown in the Fig. As a result, the light attenuation characteristics to the light signals of ≥2 kinds of the different wavelengths λ1, λ2 are made nearly equal to each other.
