Title:
AUTOMATED MINI SURGICAL STITCHING MACHINE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2011/024036
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A battery operated portable surgical suturing device comprising rotary wheels driving a needle arm. A suturing needle is coupled to the needle arm so that the needle arm can move the suturing needle up and down. The needle arm is mobile in different angles to facilitate its use in surgical field. A tension control knob is provided for tensioning the suturing thread.

Title of the invention: Automated mini surgical stitching machine

The embodiment of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. An automated battery operated handheld portable mini surgical stitching machine composed of batteries connected to the motor attached to rotary wheels which is attached to an arm where the needle will be moving up and down for stitching opposite the metal fastening plate as shown in the picture (Machine from inside).

2. A machine (tool) as defined in claim 1 , in which there is power/switch control connected to the batteries for on/off purpose and near to it, there is a safety (lock/unlock) button for safety.

3. A machine (tool) as defined in claims 1 and 2 in which the piece containing the needle can be moved in different angles to suit the purpose of stitching in a small working surgical field.

4. A machine (tool) as defined in claims 1 , 2 and 3 in which the threads are surgical stitches and all the unit will be supplied in a sterile condition.

5. A machine (tool) as defined in claims 1 , 2, 3 and 4 where there is a bobbin where the threads are kept and taken to the first thread guide, then over the tension control, then through the second thread guide, then to the needle to be ready for stitching as shown in the picture (Machine from outside).

6. A machine (tool) as defined in claims 1 , 2, 3, 4 and 5 where is a separate

threader is supplied with the machine to help pass the thread through the needle easily as shown in the picture (threader).

Description

Title of the invention: Automated mini surgical stitching machine

Technical Field:

Surgical Field

This invention relates to automated mini surgical stitching machine to be used for stitching the vessels and tissues during the surgical operations in the hospitals in a sterile fashion.

Background Art:

To stitch a piece of clothing using a sewing machine compared to doing it manually is of course faster, nice in shape , less efforts, time and resources.

For years using manual stitching is the standard of care in the operation Theatres in the hospitals for performing surgical operations and closing the wounds

Of course we cannot take the tissues of the human body outside to do the stitching using the sewing machine but thanks to the modern technology which enables us to get the old machines smaller in size and more user friendly (examples are too much e.g. we can use small hand held i pod instead of using standard big desktop computers to perform the same function)

My novel idea here is to make use of the technology and invent a small automated battery operated mini hand held stitching machine, load it with the surgical stitches, use it in a sterile condition and use it for connecting the vessels and close the tissues and wounds in the different types of surgery.

The advantage of this new technique using the new machine will be performing the operations with less time, efforts, resources and avoiding the human errors which can happen with manual stitching

One of the most draw backs of using the manual stitching in the surgeries is the possibility of bleeding with its subsequent more use of blood transfusion which has the risk of allergic reactions and disease transmission. So, with this technique it is expected that the rate of blood transfusion will be much less.

The mini hand held sewing machine for stitching the clothes and fabrics is available in the market recently

My idea is to modify that machine in the following aspects to get it ready for use inside the human body: 1. It will be smaller in size

2. Use specific surgical stitches

3. The needle part will be mobile in different directions to be easy and user friendly inside the human body

4. It should be sterile before use

Brief Description:

During surgical operations, for example in the heart transplant operations or replacement of a piece of the aorta (Big vessel coming from the heart), the process of connecting the new heart or the new vessels done manually by the surgeon's hands which takes time and usually there is bleeding between the stitches which needs more time and extra stitches to control and eventually the need for blood transfusion to compensate for the bleeding with its hazards like allergic reactions and disease transmission.

Using an automated handheld portable battery operated mini stitching machine to perform the stitching, connect big vessels together and closing wounds will make the surgical operation time shorter, which means less time for the patient under general anaesthesia and more important better automated perfect stitching with less bleeding and less need for blood transfusion.

The comparison between my invention and the conventional way for stitching manually during surgical procedures is simply like comparing sewing a piece of clothing manually with needle and thread and sewing it with the sewing machine.

Brief Description of the Drawings:

The machine is small in size 15 X 4 X 3 cm, battery operated, portable, handheld in one surgeon's hand, has safety lock to lock it when not in use, has a tension control knob to get different degrees of tension according to different tissues and procedures, the needle part is moving in different angles to facilitate its use in different directions, can handle different types of sterile stitching threads and supplied in a sterile fashion.

To thread, take the thread from the bobbin, insert thread through the first thread guide, pull thread over the tension control knob between the opening on the metal washers. These provide the tension to the thread. Then under the arm through the second thread guide. The rotary wheel from outside can be used to move the needle up and down by turning it in either direction. We can manually lift the arm by pushing it up even if the power is off. Then the threader will be inserted through the needle to pull the thread through the needle from the back to the front. Then the thread can be pulled through the opening of the metal fastening plate.

To stitch, we have to lift the metal plate and keep it above the tissues to be stitched. Then the power switch to be unlocked. Then turn the rotary wheel in either direction to lower the needle. Then press the power button to stitch.

To lock the stitch, after the last stitch is made, press firmly over it and use scissors to cut the thread, do not pull the thread as it will unravel the stitch. But rather while firmly holding the stitch; use the threader to pull the loop through the stitch to pull thread through the backside. This will make a knot on the backside

Best mode of carrying out of the invention:

In my opinion will be with its utilization by the surgical industrial companies to introduce the machine.

Industrial Applicability: Surgical Industry
