Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a backlight unit and a liquid-crystal display device using the backlight unit, with which it is possible to switch the view field angle of the liquid-crystal display device, and in which the luminance on the positive and negative sides of a polar angle is symmetrical in relation to the normal line. The problem is resolved by having: a light guide plate; a first light source that introduces light from a long side or a short side of the light guide plate; a second light source that introduces light from a side of the light guide plate differing from the first light source; a first diffraction element provided on one main surface of the light guide plate and diffracting only light from the first light source or the second light source; a second diffraction element provided on the other main surface of the light guide plate and diffracting only the light from the other light source; and a reflection plate provided on the surface of the light guide plate on the opposite side from the light emission surface.
