Abstract:
An objective of the present invention is to sense, by a capacitance sensor, a foreign object which is attached to the inner part of a card reader for illicit purposes, as well as to reduce the probability of misidentifying a card as said foreign object. A control unit 30 of a card reader 1 monitors whether a card 2 is present in a card passage 6, on the basis of an output signal from a card sensor 9. If it has been assessed that the card 2 is not present, an assessment is made as to whether a foreign object is present on the basis of an output signal from a capacitance sensor 10. The card reader 1 comprises a temperature sensor 41 and a humidity sensor 42. The control unit 30 carries out temperature correction and humidity correction for a detection threshold value CT that has been read from a storage unit 34, and uses a detection threshold value CT1 obtained through the correction to assess whether the foreign object is present.
