Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a composition for improving and treating obesity or liver-related diseases, comprising p-Coumaric acid as an active ingredient. In order to confirm that p-Coumaric acid (PCA) treats liver inflammation or liver fibrosis, a mouse model that was fed a high fat and high sucrose (HFHS) diet was treated with the p-Coumaric acid of the present invention. As a result, confirmed were the effects of: (1) reducing total cholesterol and suppressing accumulation of free cholesterol, and increasing glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity; (2) suppressing liver tissue inflammatory genes and proteins; and (3) inhibiting fibrosis-related genes or proteins. In addition, the role of p-Coumaric acid (PCA) in down-regulating NLRP3 activation and caspase-1 cleavage was first identified, and thus, p-Coumaric acid (PCA) is effective in treating liver fibrosis and liver inflammation and can be helpfully used in related projects.
