Abstract:
The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, ameliorating, or treating epilepsy, the composition comprising gintonin as an active ingredient. Gintonin of the present invention has the effects of: reducing seizure behavior in a temporal lobe epilepsy animal model in which apoptosis of excitatory neurons is induced by kainic acid; and significantly inhibiting apoptosis of hippocampal neurons, activity of microglial cells and astrocytes, and the expression of COX-2 and iNOS that are representative inflammation mediators. Accordingly, the composition comprising gintonin of the present invention may be useful as a composition for preventing, treating, or ameliorating epilepsy.
