Abstract:
The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition, a functional food composition, and a cosmetic composition which include methyl benzoate or a derivative thereof as an active ingredient, and are for preventing or treating stress-related diseases. A composition according to the present invention significantly improves behavioral indicators of individuals exposed to stressful environments, significantly reduces blood cortisol concentration, and significantly suppresses cortisol concentration and stress-related gene expression in skin fibroblasts, and can thus be applied to neurological diseases and skin diseases caused by stress, as well as to various stress-related diseases accompanied by increased cortisol secretion. The present invention uses, as an active ingredient, a naturally-derived compound that is already being consumed as a food additive, and thus has few side effects even when administered for a long time. Thus, the present invention can be effectively used as an effective therapeutic composition for various stress-related diseases, most of which are chronic diseases.
