Description:
Cutting device

Field of the Invention The present invention concerns a cutting device of the kind indicated in the introduction of claim 1.

Background of the Invention

By pasting or mounting self-adhesive films, in particular large posters for advertising purposes, a prior art cutting device is applied for performing a transverse cut at a short distance from a free upper end edge of the film such that a corresponding short strip of liner or backing paper can readily be removed immediately before mounting such that a corresponding narrow edge area of the self-adhesive back side can be used for starting the pasting/mounting.

The said prior art cutting device is designed as a block-shaped body which is designed with slotted side openings spaced apart from a bottom face at both sides, respectively, of the block-shaped body, which at one end is designed with a vertical slot in which is mounted a knife blade, of which a sharpened edge part protrudes down into one of the slotted side openings, whereas a set screw at the opposite side of the cutting device is arranged for regulating the cutting force on the knife blade, as the said side openings together have a depth which is slightly less than the width of the cutting device, i.e. an upper part of the block-shaped cutting device may yield resiliently in relation to a bottom part of the block.

Setting the pressure or force on the knife blade is difficult to perform correctly and precisely, since by using the prior art knife one may accidentally compress the block- shaped body further such that the pressure on the knife blade and thereby the cutting depth can be influenced - with the consequence that the transverse cut easily becomes deeper than the thickness of liner or backing paper, i.e. so that the poster becomes damaged. WO 2007/079748 Al discloses a method and an apparatus for mounting self-adhesive foil which is provided with a liner or backing paper treated with a release agent, wherein a transverse cut is performed in the liner at a short distance from a free end edge of the foil, where the self-adhesive foil is rolled up to form a roll with the front side of the foil facing outwards in the roll, and with the upper part of the image on the foil disposed at the free edge of the roll, where the free edge of the foil is fixed externally on an application apparatus, where the foil roll is placed in the application apparatus with the free end of the roll passed out of the application apparatus through an outlet aperture or slot before closing and fixing a lid over an inlet aperture, where the liner is released from the foil below the transverse cut, and where the upper part of the foil is disposed in the desired position of application, as a plane top side of the application apparatus is preferably used as aiming means, whereafter the foil is transferred under pressing contact against the surface of application and simultaneous downward movement of the application apparatus, the foil being mounted in stretched position on the application surface as the liner is concurrently released from the foil.

Object of the Invention

The object of the invention is to indicate an improved cutting device of the kind specified in the introduction, and which in a simple way may facilitate and improve correct positioning and cutting depth of the knife and facilitate replacement of the knife as well.

Description of the Invention

The cutting device according to the invention is characterised in that it includes a body part with a central upright, elongated holder part which at the bottom is integrated with a sole in which the lower slotted side opening is formed, and that it includes an adjustable clip integrated in the holder part, the clip adapted to fix the foremost part of the knife. By simple means is hereby achieved an improved cutting device of the kind specified in the introduction which in a simple way may facilitate and improve correct positioning and cutting depth of the knife and facilitate replacement of the knife.

The cutting device according to the invention is suitably designed such that the knife is constituted by the rearmost part of a standard knife blade, of which a rearmost hole is fastened to the side of the holder part in such a way that the knife blade is positioned forwardly/downwardly inclining with the foremost pointed end almost in contact with an upper bottom part of the sole. In practice is used a standard knife consisting of a number of blade segments which are intended for breaking off as the knife blade becomes dull. Before mounting a new knife blade, a number of the first segments are broken off, and the remaining segments, which include a hole, are mounted in the clip of the cutting device.

The cutting device according to the invention may advantageously be designed such that the clip includes a resilient holder part which is adapted to fix the knife blade in proper vertical position.

With the object of facilitating replacement of the knife blade, the cutting device according to the invention may advantageously be designed such that the resilient holder part of the clip has a fixing tongue which allows the knife blade to be inserted and fixed in proper vertical position from an open side of the clip

With the object of simplifying the clip, the cutting device according to the invention may advantageously be designed such that that the resilient holder part is upwardly connected with a lower end of a set screw with a threaded part that interacts with a nut or a thread which is fastened or formed in the central holder part.

In order to protect the poster evading the knife edge, the cutting device according to the invention may suitably be designed such that an upper side of the sole opposite the foremost pointed end of the knife blade is designed with an elongated depression which allows a front side of poster to evade downwardly away from the pointed end of the knife blade.

In order to make the cutting device according to the invention cheaper, advantageously it may preferably be made by injection moulding in a suitable plastic material which can be further reinforced according to need. Description of the Drawing

Detailed Description of the Invention

The cutting device 2 shown on the drawing includes a central elongated holder part 4 which is integrated at the bottom with a sole 6 in which a slotted side opening 8 is formed. The holder part 4 includes a clip 10 integrated therein which is adapted for retaining and fixing a front part 12 of a knife blade 14 which by means of a hole 16 in a rearmost part 18 of the knife blade 14 is adapted for being secured at the side of the holder part 4 by means of a finger screw 20. As most clearly shown in Fig. 3, the clip 10 has a holder part 22 with a spring tongue 24 adapted to abut on an upper narrow side edge of the knife blade 14, and which allows it to be inserted from an open side 26 to the shown position at which the knife blade 14 is retained between a lower fixed clip part 28 and the upper spring tongue 22. As it most clearly appears from Figs. 1, 2, 7 and 8, the clip 10 is arranged in a forwardly inclining position such that the knife blade 14 in its normal forwardly/downwardly inclining cutting position (Fig. 8) is disposed perpendicularly to a centre axis through the clip 10.

The holder part 22 is upwardly connected with a set screw 30 that interacts with a thread or a nut 32 integrated in or connected with the holder part 4 of the cutting device 2.

The depth of the slotted side opening 8 defines the width of an edge strip, e.g. of a liner or a backing paper, of a self-adhesive poster which in order to facilitate mounting or pasting is to be cut off by means of the cutting device 2 prior to the mounting or pasting.

Immediately under a lower pointed cutting edge 34 of the knife blade 14, the top side of the sole 6 is designed with a depression 36 which has the purpose of allowing posters to evade downwardly, such that the cutting edge 34 does not scratch or mark the poster permanently.

Therefore, it is also very important that the spacing between the cutting edge 34 and the top side of the sole 6 can be set very accurately, of course also determined by the actual thickness of liner or backing paper.

At the same time, it is also important that the knife blade 14 is easy to replace, which is effected by loosening the fmger screw 20, after which the knife blade may easily be removed from the clip 10. A standard knife consisting of a number of knife blade segments and having a hole 16 at the rearmost end is preferably used. When mounting a new knife blade 14, seven blade segments are broken off the front end of the knife blade such that five blade segments remain. The adapted knife blade 14 is easily mounted by fixing the rearmost end thereof by means of the finger screw 20 while simultaneously pressing the knife blade 14 laterally in position between the clip part 28 and the spring tongue 24.
