[Problem] To provide: a drum-like item conveying device with which it is possible to easily convey a drum-like item at low cost and without inflicting damage thereto while achieving downsizing of the device; and a drum-like item conveying method. [Solution] This drum-like item conveying device is provided with: a moving table which has a receiving surface that comes into contact with a lateral surface of a drum-like item, and which holds said drum-like item by coming close to the lateral surface of the drum-like item; a fixed table which has a second contact surface that is disposed so as to be spaced away by a prescribed gap from a first contact surface disposed on the side opposite to the receiving surface of the moving table; a wedge member which has a first lateral surface coming into contact with the first contact surface and a second lateral surface coming into contact with the second contact surface, and which is inserted between the fixed table and the moving table so as to bring the moving table close to the side of the drum-like item; an extension/retraction mechanism which inserts the wedge member between the moving table and the fixed table or separates the wedge member away from the moving table and fixed table; and an air bearing which causes at least the moving table to be levitated.
