Description:

DRUM FOR RAG-TEARING AND CARDING MACHINES Technical field

The present invention relates to a drum provided with rag-tearing spikes for rag-tearing and carding machines. Background Art

In current machines, the drum is covered by flat elements generally made of wood, known as slats, which are fixed by means of screws along the generatrices of the surface of the drum. The slats are provided with steel spikes which, upon rotation of the drum, tear the material such as rags and fibers. The traditional assembly system of known drums entails, in case of breakage or bending of some of the rag-tearing spikes (caused for example by incorrect contact of tools with the spikes during operation), the replacement of the entire slat, causing high costs and long repair times. Disclosure of the Invention The aim of the present invention is to eliminate the above-mentioned drawbacks of known drums, by providing a drum on which both the slats and the rag-tearing spikes are easy to apply and replace, so as to increase the efficiency of the machine on which the drum is installed.

This aim and other objects which will become better apparent hereinafter are achieved by a drum whose characteristics are defined in the claims. Brief description of the drawings

Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred but not exclusive embodiment thereof, illustrated by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side view of a drum, according to the invention; Figure 2 is an axial view of the drum;

Figures 3, 4, 5 are three views, respectively a front view, a side view and an axial view of a slat;

Figures 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are views of five different types of plate;

Figure 1 1 is a sectional view of a portion of the drum, of the slats, of the plates and of the elements for fixing to the drum. Ways of carrying out the Invention With reference to the figures, in Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 generally designates a rotating drum of a rag-tearing machine and the reference numeral 2 (Figure 1 1) designates its cylindrical surface, made for example of wood or other material.

Slats 3 are arranged on the surface 2 along the generatrices and their face directed toward the surface 2 is complementary to the camber of said surface.

The slats 3 can be constituted by elongated plates made of metal (aluminum) or plastics or wood and have a substantially rectangular cross- section; a protrusion 4 protrudes from the face of the plates that lies opposite the one in contact with the surface 2 (Figure 5); such protrusion forms two steps 5 together with the lateral edges.

The slats 3 are fixed to the surface 2 of the drum in any manner, for example by means of screws, and are mutually separated by a slot or seat 6.

In the protrusion 4 of the slats there are a plurality of grooves, constituted by mutually parallel notches 7 which are inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the drum.

Rag-tearing elements 8 are positioned within the notches 7 and each element is constituted by a plate 9, which is accommodated in the respective notch 7 and from which a plurality of pointed teeth 10, curved in the same direction, rise.

Various embodiments of rag-tearing plates, which differ in terms of tooth number and shape, are shown in Figures 6-10.

The plates 9 have a length which is equal to the width of the slats 3, so that once they are positioned in the notches 7, their opposite ends protrude above the steps 5.

The plates 9 are fixed in the notches 7 by means of strips 1 1 which have a T-shaped cross-section. The central portion 12 of the strips is as wide as the slots 6 that separate the slats, while ridges 13 arranged laterally with respect to the central portion 12 are arranged so that when the central portion 12 has been inserted in the respective slot the ridges 13 lie above the ends of the plates, which are conveniently provided with recesses 14 (Figure 6).

In this manner, by means of screws inserted through the central portion 12 of the strips and screwed into the drum, it is possible to lock the plates, clamping their ends between the ridges 13 and the steps 5.

Therefore, the described invention achieves the intended aim. In particular, it is noted that any damaged or worn plates can be replaced easily and rapidly by removing the corresponding strips without acting on the slats. The invention is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the appended claims.

For example, the slats 3 can be fixed to the drum so that by fixing the strips 1 1 they remain clamped against the surface of the drum by the plates.
